The Effect of Existing Knowledge on Policy Analysis

Imagine that you are at a professional gathering, and you strike up a conversation with a colleague. The two of you end up in a lively discussion about the policy issues concerning development of a nearby wetland.

During the conversation, your colleague mentions that she, in fact, did some policy analysis associated with the project and says, “Well, I was a natural choice, given my degree in urban development.”
As you head home, you ponder this. Obviously we all have existing knowledge, but how does, or how
should, that affect the perspective one takes in the actual analysis of a policy matter? Do you believe
that one’s perspective on a policy matter should be driven by one’s existing knowledge of the field under
examination? What are the pros and cons of such an approach?

Mrs. Mary White Rowlandson Faith in God*****Already A++ Rated Tutorial Use as Guide Paper*****

Essay 2 is due this week. Write a 500-750 word essay on one of the following topics. Aim for a 5-paragraph essay structure ( introduction with thesis, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion).

1.    Review Mary Rowlandson’s narrative as a faith narrative instead of a capture narrative. If instead of viewing the work as an attempt to tell the true story of a capture, it is read as a reaffirmation of faith in God, how does that change the meaning?

2.    Discuss the idea of the Reliable Narrator in one of the authors read up until this point. Use specific examples from outside sources and the text to show why it should or should not be believed that this author is reliable.

3.    Think about this rather surprising statement: It has been suggested that Olaudah Equiano may not have been born in Africa, but in South Carolina. If this were true, does his birthplace change the way we read and evaluate this memoir? Does this possibility affect its viability or reliability as a source on slavery and the slave trade?

4.    Compare or contrast two individuals from weeks one through four who best illuminate important themes of America during the time period covered. Define the themes you’ll write about, and then discuss what precisely in the writing defines those themes. Discuss these themes as they relate to current day approach or understanding.

Your essay should be formatted in MLA style, including double spacing throughout. All sources should be properly cited both in the text and on a works cited page. As with most academic writing, this essay should be written in third person. Please avoid both first person (I, we, our, etc.) and second person (you, your).

In the upper left-hand corner of the paper, place your name, the professor’s name, the course name, and the due date for the assignment on consecutive lines. Double space your information from your name onward, and don’t forget a title. All papers should be in Times New Roman font with 12-point type with one-inch margins all the way around your paper. All paragraph indentations should be indented five spaces (use the tab key) from the left margin. All work is to be left justified. When quoting lines in literature, please research the proper way to cite short stories, plays, or poems.

FOR MADAM PROFESSOR

ver the last two weeks we have been spending our time discussing “The History of African American Entertainment” the artists who have made substantial impacts to the genre,  to the culture at large and how we view these values, issues, histories, and social conflicts today as we reflect on the past.

We have been doing this with the vehicle  and lens of Art and entertainment, the compelling stories and dynamic characters of our recent Black American History that have sprung from the roots, remembering’s and re-telling’s of what actually happened in our past and how we as a society wrestled with it then, and today.

This week you watched Dutchman. Here we have a playwright who is challenging our view of the past and how the struggle for certain races to succeed, forced to assimilate into a white dominated world view are hampered and faltered not only by modern society, the social norms and decorum or – code of conduct – of the day, but also by the personal struggle and need for self identity in the face of a very rooted value system (Jim crow) that had been lived in and ascribed to since the days after Reconstruction.

Now that you have done the reading and are able to reflect over the past two weeks,  I would like you to wrestle  with  this quote from Notes on Dutchman.

“Baraka challenges the black community to produce art that portrays the human condition, and provides The Dutchman as a paradigm”………”It must be produced from the legitimate emotional resources of the soul in the world. It can never be produced by evading these resources”

– What is the human condition that Baraka speaks to?

– How is the SYMBOL of the Dutchman and the train that the play takes place in provide a “PARADIGM” for more effective storytelling?

– How do we understand the human condition (as Baraka sees it) in a better way?

– What do you feel are “legitimate emotional resources of the soul“?

– What does Baraka mean when he says this? Do you agree with his stance? Why or why not?

Now, as we look at this topic through the lens of our present day and 2017, how do you feel we are doing as a society in providing entertainment and the telling of stories (Theatre, film, T.V.) about civil rights generally, black history, and how we have progresses as a society since the first time that Dutchman or A Raisin in the Sun, first made an impact on the American public and body-politic?
